Explore little-seen rooms within Ashton Court Mansion, drawing it's dilapidation and sketching with friends you haven't met yet.
The Sketch Up Friday sessions at Ashton Court Mansion, Bristol, are already booking up! Dates for 2020 have been set until the end of June. However, for the first time, we have permission to grant access to the first floor of this historic mansion as well as the ground floor.
Please bring along your own materials and sketchbook and join us as we meet new friends and enjoy sketching together! This will be an informal drawing session with a small group of people.
We will be exploring the inside of Ashton Court mansion, venturing through the ground floor and up to the first floor, accessing rooms that few have seen and drawing what we find.
We are going to be exploring the Vaulted entrance in the South Gate House, the Music Room and the Great Hall, as well as rooting out great spots to sketch outside and other nooks and crannies. For the first time ever, we will also have access to the first floor of the property. Join me in discovering the condition of the house, entering Sir Greville Smyth's chambers, sketching Dame Emily Smyth's boudoir and looking for the ghost in Dame Esme Smyths bedroom, where she died in 1946.
There is an original Tudor window; mock jacobean ceilings, part-destroyed; wooden panelling stacked in corners; ornate fireplaces peeping out from behind stacked doors; the wardrobes which might once have inspired C.S. Lewis during his convalescence on site; elaborate cornices and empty spaces where rooms once would have been.
